Blog 4

I can't believe Belize has already gone and passed, but it's nice to be home. I had the time of my life, learned a lot, and changed a lot. Trips like these bring me back to reality of the simplicity of life. Many people get back from a trip and say, "It's back to reality" but when I get back it's a huge culture shock, and I feel like my ways of life should change. I admire the Belizean lifestyle; relaxed, work hard for what you get, and stop to chat with someone even though you may be on your way to work. There is a beauty to that life in contrast to the busy "American" life. In Belize I felt like people wanted to hear baout my day, and cared about who I was. I wasn't just another face. I also felt a lot more comfortable in belize than I do in kentucky; I wasn't as shy or hesitant, i was confident and open to tackle anything that came my way. I felt like I had more say and freedom. I felt more respectful and respected (except for the guys in San Pedro,ha). I also felt more of a community and kindness while in Belize.
As you know, nursing is my major, and I have hopes of being a traveling nurse one day. I love traveling and learning/being a part of other cultures. Living and sharing experiences in various cultures will give me a better understanding for my patients. I will have patients from all kinds of places and backgrounds so I can not treat every person the same. Everyone likes to be treated differently and have their own ways/views so it is my job to respect that and learn that before helping my patient. Also, when you know about their cultural background, it makes them feel more comfortable while seeking help. Anyhting is helpful when you are sick and in a strange place with people helping you that you don't know.
Now that I have been to Belize, I would love to go back in the future as a nurse, to help those in need and be a part of the Belizean culture once again.

  1. First of all - your pictures are awesome! Second, I would never think to describe you as shy and was shocked when you mentioned that in your blog. You did have great confidence and poise in Belize, especially at the Rotary meeting. I hope you can find a way keep that going now that you are back in the US. - M.E.

  2. I loved your comment about "back to reality". Reverse culture shock is such an interesting notion to me, and something I always really struggle with--as do you. Thanks for sharing!
